These shells come from the lightning whelk, a marine gastropod species native to North American waters. They have been used by Native Americans for tool making, ornaments and jewelry. Also known as the state shell of Texas.
The average width of the Medium whelk shells is 5.5" wide, while the Large shells average 6" wide, and the X-Large, 6" wide. The Medium and Large shells weigh about 1.3 lbs, while the X-Large weigh about 1.7 lbs.
A U.S. Fish & Wildlife export permit is required for all shipments outside the U.S.
