These shells come from the lightning whelk, a marine gastropod species native to North American waters. They have been used by Native Americans for tool making, ornaments and jewelry. Also known as the state shell of Texas.
The average width of the Extra Small whelk shells is 4" wide, while the Small shells average 5" wide. The shells are about 8 oz each.
A U.S. Fish & Wildlife export permit is required for all shipments outside the U.S.
