I purchased these awesome hand-made baskets at the Abenaki reservation in Odanak, Quebec in July 2005 from Marguerite Panadis, who is liquidating her store as a result of an illness that set in around 2000. The baskets are made using sweetgrass and ash splint weaved into beautiful patterns. The birchbark box is handmade by an artisan from the Slave Tribe in Fort Liard in the Northwest Territories. It is bound together with spruce roots on the lid and artificial sinew on the bottom, and decorated with dyed porcupine quills on the lid only. It is tied with a moose hide leather lace that may or may not be smoked. A USFWS export permit is required for all shipments outside the USA.

Rogans are birch bark baskets made by the Attikameks in Quebec, Canada. The baskets were traditionally used by women collecting berries in the forest and for storing food. They are made from birch bark that has been tied together with spruce roots. Most rogans have smoked moose hide straps. Usually, the rogans are decorated with designs of flowers and animals that have been scraped into the bark. Some large containers are used as clothes hampers.
